NINE MILE BURN

Nine Miles South East of Roslin is the start of the river North Esk,
the name Esk fairly common as it derives from
the Gaelic for Water, Iska or Eska.​

A handfull of Streams and Burns coming
from the near by Pentland Hills near by,
allow this once little stream to fill the ancient water course
formed by the glacier melts of the last Ice age.​

The area is named Nine Mile Burn,
as it is nine Miles to Roslin.​

And old Celtic tradition
to mark nine mile perimeter
around a Sacred Site,
as well the fact in Celtic
and even more recent times.​

Folk would travel from place to place
following streams and riverways.​

No doubt a site of signifigance pre Chistianity,
it marked on old maps as Fairy Glen.​

And local history accounts for a near by farm
likely once owned the Knights Templar,
a Hospice for travellers run by the Knights Hospitallers.​

To a fond place
for old Gypsy travellers
to find sanctuary,
and where Newhall House
stands today some believe
to have been a Cistercian Monastery,
likely connected to Newbattle Abbey
closer to Edinburgh.​
