"ARROKOTH was discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope,
which has its' science operations in Baltimore,
which is considered in the Chesepeake Bay region.

The Native American tribe that made its home
there is the Powhatan people.

When in November 2019 this newly discovered celestial body
received a name, the New Horizons team got the consent
of the Powhatan Tribe Elders to name it ARROKOTH,
which is the Powhatan word for "sky".

Astronomer Alan Stern has said,

"The name ‘Arrokoth’ reflects the inspiration
of looking to the skies, and wondering about the star
s and worlds beyond our own.”
