    MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO CANADA
    (NEAR TORONTO)
Earlier this week, a Lorne Park resident had her two small dogs on her driveway close to Richard’s Memorial Park
along Lakeshore, her dogs barked frantically when they saw a large animal (there were two actually) across the road,
it came to the driveway in front of the dog owner, snatched and snapped the five-pound chihuahua’s neck
and ran with it into the forested area of the park.
Another Burlington resident saved her dog from being coywolf_Nov6-300x224.
snatched and killed by a coyote in the nick of time.

There have been a spate of coyote sightings all over the GTA (GREATER TORONTO AREA)
and this is an indication that their numbers have certainly increased.

With winter around the corner, they will be on the look out for food sources.

Many Torontonians are familiar with coyotes and wolves, but coywolves?
These are much larger than regular coyotes, more tanned in color and are a hybrid
between the Western coyote and the Eastern wolf which has been a result of cross breeding
    between wolves and coyotes.

Their numbers appear to be rapidly increasing, they’ve adapted to urban and rural living, don’t generally get into confrontation with humans, but as the recent dog-grabbing incident suggests, they have little fear
of such behavior in the presence of a human standing right there.

Would the dog owner have been attacked if she tried any aggressive intervention?
No one is saying for sure but it is clear that there can well be a likelihood of this happening,
which explains the decision to post signs in parks warning residents to stay alert
and to be able to identify the coywolf.

Tips to stay safe if you spot a coyote or a coywolf

-Be as big and loud as possible. Do not run or turn your back.
-Wave your arms, clap your hands, and shout in an authoritative voice.
-Make noise by banging pots and pans or using an air horn or whistle.
-Throw small stones, sticks, tennis balls or anything else you can lay your hands on.
Remember the intent is to scare and not to injure.
-Spray with a hose, if available, or a squirt gun filled with water and vinegar.
-Shake or throw a “coyote shaker”—a soda can filled with pennies or pebbles and sealed with duct tape.
-If your property adjoins parks or is near a forested area, don’t leave food items that could likely attract
these animals into your backyard. Keep it as inhospitable to these animals.
