IF the Corps of Engineers had not straightened and maintained,
I was told the natural course of the River would have been down the Atchafalaya,
totally bypassing Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

  probably still less a matter of if that will happen but of when.
  It’s been touch and go since the 1973 flood.
  The engineering isn’t as confident as is generally supposed.
  Given the vagaries of climate change
  there will eventually be an extreme flood that will cause it.
  It’s fairly complicated science,
  but the floodplain itself
  is rather more complicated than is supposed.
