Inipi, The Purification Ritual ~ Onikaghe (sweating Cabin / Sweat Lodge)

Lakota cosmology is manifested in the design, construction
and functionality of the onikaghe (sweating cabin) used in Inipi,
the purification ritual.

All the Powers of the Universe are used: the Earth
and everything that is born of it;
water, fire and air to build a sacred space.

An igloo-shaped hut, covered in blankets that shape
the belly of the Cosmos and Mother Earth.

The willows that form the warehouse stick to the ground
in such a way that indicate the four directions of the Universe;
thus in the whole of the cabin is the Universe in image,
and it covers the peoples bipedos, quadrupedos and wings
and all s the things of the world.

It is a place of prayer, therefore a Temple.

The onikaghe is always built with the gate towards the East,
for from there comes the light of Wisdom.

About ten steps away a ritual home is built called Peta Owihankeshni,
"endless fire", and there the stones that represent the Earth Grandmother,
from which all the fruits come and also the indestructible
and eternal Nature of the Great Spirit.

The central altar of the cabin where the hot stones
will be taken is the center of the Universe,
in which the Great Spirit dwells with its Power, fire.

A pit is dug in the center of the cabin,
a circle with a leather strip is drawn around it.

With the land collected like this,
a trail that drives outside the cabin
in the eastbound direction
and at the end of which a small mound is lifted.

Aromatic herbs and water are placed on the stones,
which produce abundant vapor,
causing the sweating of the people who are inside it.

The word Inipi derives from Lakota "Iniunkajaktelo",
meaning let's pray to the shop of sweat.

To sit around Grandparents Stones, is to be in the womb
of Mother Earth and in the center of the Cosmos,
to receive healing and purification.

The branches of sauces that form the structure of the cabin,
are formed forming two crosses of four directions
that have an associated color,
in turn represent the sixteen great mysteries of Wakan Tanka,
the creator of the universe that governs tr birds of various deities,
which are all aspects of your Ser.

 

La cosmología Lakota se manifiesta en el diseño, la construcción y la funcionalidad de la onikaghe (cabaña de sudar) utilizada en el Inipi, el rito de purificación.
Se emplean todos los Poderes del Universo: la Tierra y todo lo que nace de ella; el agua, el fuego y el aire para construir un espacio sagrado. Una cabaña en forma de iglú, cubierta de mantas que conforman el vientre del Cosmos y de la Madre Tierra.
Los sauces que forman el armazón se clavan en el suelo de manera que indiquen las cuatro Direcciones del Universo; de este modo en el conjunto de la cabaña está el Universo en imagen, y ella cobija a los pueblos bípedos, cuadrúpedos y alados y a todas las cosas del mundo.
Es un lugar de oración, por lo tanto un Templo.
La onikaghe siempre se construye con la puerta hacia el Este, pues de allí viene la luz de la Sabiduría. A unos diez pasos se construye un hogar ritual llamado Peta Owihankeshni, "fuego sin fin", y allí se calientan las piedras que representan a la Abuela Tierra, de la que provienen todos los frutos y también a la Naturaleza indestructible y eterna del Gran Espíritu.

El altar central de la cabaña adonde serán llevadas las piedras calientes es el centro del Universo, en el que mora el Gran Espíritu con su Poder, el fuego.

Se realiza cavando un pozo en el centro de la cabaña, a su alrededor se traza un círculo con una tira de cuero. Con la tierra así recogida se traza un sendero que conduce afuera de la cabaña en dirección al Este y en cuyo extremo se levanta un pequeño montículo.

Sobre las piedras se colocan hierbas aromáticas y agua, que producen abundante vapor, lo que provoca la sudación de las personas que están en el interior de ella.
La palabra Inipi deriva del Lakota "Iniunkajaktelo", que significa vamos a orar a la tienda de sudación.
Sentarse alrededor de las Abuelas y Abuelos Piedras, es estar en el vientre de la Madre Tierra y en el centro del Cosmos, para recibir la sanación y la purificación.
Las ramas de sauce que forman la estructura de la cabaña, se arman formando dos cruces de cuatro direcciones que tienen un color asociados, a su vez representan los dieciséis grandes misterios de Wakan Tanka, el creador del universo que gobierna a través de diversas deidades, que son todos los aspectos de su Ser.
