Maulana Malik Ibrahim pernah bermukim di Champa sekarang Kemboja selama tiga belas tahun sejak tahun 1379. Ia malah menikahi puteri raja yang memberinya dua orang putera. Mereka adalah Raden Rahmat @ Sunan Ampel dan Sayid Ali Murtadha @ Raden Santri. Merasakan sudah cukup menjalankan misi dakwah di negeri itu pada tahun 1392 Masehi Maulana Malik Ibrahim berhijrah ke Pulau Jawa meninggalkan keluarganya.

Maulana Malik Ibrahim, also known as Syekh Maghribi, is generally considered to be the 'father' of the Wali Songo. Little is known about his origins although it has been suggested that he came either from Persia, Turkey, or Northern India. A possible date for his arrival in Java is A.D. 1404.

As one of Indonesia's pioneers
in the spreading of the Islamic faith,
he settled in East Java
and attracted converts in the region of Gresik, where he died in 822 H. (A.D. 1419).

His tombstone is of particular interest
since it was not made locally
but ordered and shipped to Java
from Gujarat in north western India.

The stone, carved from white marble
and intricately inscribed with Arabic letters,
is one of a very few which have found
their way to Indonesia.

Other examples are known to exist
in Palembang and in the North Sumatran province of Aceh.

Di Rusia selatan ada sebuah daerah yang disebut Bukhara. Bukhara ini terletak di Samarqand. Sejak dahulu daerah yang disebut Bukhara. Bukhara ini terletak di Samarqand. Sejak dahulu daerah Samarqand dikenal sebagai daerah Islam yang menelorkan ulama-ulama besar seperti sarjana hadist terkenal yaitu Imam Bukhari yang mashur sebagai perawi hadits sahih.
Di Samarqand ini ada seorang ulama besar bernama Syekh jamalluddin Jumadil Kubra, seorang Ahlussunnah bermahzab Syafi’i, beliau mempunyai seorang putra bernama Ibrahim. Karena berasal dari Samarqand maka Ibrahim kemudian mendapat tambahan Samarqandi. Orang jawa sangat sukar mengucapkan Samarqandi maka mereka hanya menyebutkan sebagai Syekh Ibrahim Asmarakandi.
Syekh Ibrahim Asmarakandi ini diperintah oleh ayahnya yaitu Syekh Jamalluddin Jumadil Kubra untuk berda’wah ke negara-negara Asia. Perintah ini dilaksanakan, dan beliau kemudian diambil menantu oleh raja Cempa, dijodohkan dengan putri raja Cempa yang bernama Dewi Candrawulan. Negeri Cempa ini menurut sebagian ahli sejarah terletak di Muangthai. Dari perkawinannya dengan Dewi Candrawulan maka Ibrahim Asmarakandi mendapat dua orang putra yaitu Raden Rahmat atau Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah dan raden Santri atau Sayyid Alim Murtolo.
Sedangkan adik Dewi Candrawulan yang bernama Dewi Dwarawati diperistri oleh Prabu Brawijaya Majapahit. Dengan demikian Raden Rahmat itu keponakan Ratu Majapahit dan tergolong putra bangsawan atau pangeran kerajaan. Raja Majapahit sangat senang mendapat istri dari negeri Cempa yang wajahnya tidak kalah menarik dengan Dewi Sari. Sehingga istri-istri lainnya diceraikan, banyak yang diberikan kepada para adipatinya yang tersebar di seluruh Nusantara.
