    Tom Rector says:
I was working in 1975 for $1.89 an hour
washing dishes from 5 pm to 11 pm
so I know minimum wage was NOT $2.03.
    After taxes, disability, etc.
    I pocketed around $1.40.

    in 1974 *i think
    i was working at exxon/esso
    i made $3.61/hr (in canada)
plus shift prem, which could be as much as triple time
(if you worked on christmas day)

    MOST of my friends
    made min. wage of $1.65/hr

a pack of 20 cigarettes was 0.50 cents
    gas was about 39.9/gallon
house was about $45-60,000 (a very plain average home - 1000 sq feet 3 bedroom to 1500 sq feet 4 bedroom)
car was about $4000 on a low - and, maybe $8000 on a high (unless you were after imports)
    movie ticket $1.00 to $2.50
    skating $0.25 inside, 0.10 outside
roller skating $1.50 ? (more, if you did NOT own your own skates)
    bread 4 loaves for $1.00
    butter 1 lb $1.00
    milk 3 gallons / $3.00
postage stamp about 12cents - and, every year, it would go up 1 or 2 pennies
2 lb bag of brown sugar $2.00
5 lb bag of white processed sugar $2.50
5 lb bag of sugar in the raw (and; yup; we bought this $5.00) but , it was best !!!
