    ‘Christmas Star’ To Light Up

December Sky For First Time In 800 Years

    2-4-728x381.

I am not what one would refer to as a “star gazer”. However, in my lifetime I have seen some truly wonderful phenomena.

I have gazed at far north night skies over Lake Superior so clear you can actually see the milk of the milky way.

Over Georgian Bay I spotted tiny satellites spinning their endless journey among the stars.

In Haliburton it was a single shooting star and I even witnessed a meteor shower in the summery pristine
black skies of Earl Rowe Park.

ll these things sent me into somewhat of an existential crisis, with an overwhelming feeling of “smallness”.

However, can you imagine the opportunity to observe the same “Christmas Star” the three wise men followed to Bethlehem?

It seems impossible, yet come December 21, 2020,
all eyes should turn to the western skies at dusk to view the rare celestial event. (1)

    Christmas Star Appears After 800-Years

If you are a star gazer chances are you might notice Jupiter and Saturn seem much larger than usual of late.

This is because our two largest planets are preparing to create a “double planet”
as they almost cross paths on December 21, 2020. (1)

Just imagine, this phenomena has not been seen in 800 years.

That brings us back to the Middle Ages, a time when such a sight probably stirred up
superstition and fear. Although the two planets will look like they could easily collide,
they will not be anywhere near each other. (1)
Jupiter and Saturn Align For Christmas Star

Saturn and Jupiter aligned sometime in November 2020, creating what is called a “conjunction”.

A conjunction is the term used for two objects lining up in the sky.

However, what will create the massive Christmas Star
is the conjunction’s alignment with the Earth on December 21st. (1)

In reality, of course, the two planets won’t be close at all.

Think about the distance from the Earth to the Sun.

That’s what astronomers call an astronomical unit (au),
and it’s how they measure distances in the vastness of the Solar System.
Jupiter is 5 au from us while Saturn is 10. (1)

“Alignments between these two planets are rather rare,
occurring once every 20 years or so, but this conjunction
is exceptionally rare because of how close the planets will appear to be to one another,”
explains Patrick Hartigan, astronomer at Rice University. (1)
    Christmas Star Triple Conjunction

Jupiter and Saturn align in a “great conjunction” every 19.6 years.

However, come December 21st, they will only be separated by less than the diameter of a full Moon.

“You’d have to go all the way back to just before dawn on March 4, 1226,
to see a closer alignment between these objects visible in the night sky,” says Hartigan. (1)

Going way back, legendary German astronomer Johannes Kepler and others figure
it’s possible what the shepherds and three wise men followed as the “star of Bethlehem”
might be a result of an even rarer triple conjunction of Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus. (1)
    How To Spot Christmas Star

If you want to try your luck at spotting the Christmas Star, point your telescope
to the western horizon at 6 p.m. CST, (or about 45 minutes after your sunset time)
    December 21, 2020.

With an unobstructed view, and if the skies are clear, you could witness this rare celestial event.

You can spot it for about an hour after sunset in the northern hemisphere
at the same time throughout the week. After December 21st, it will be lower in the sky.

Experts say its brightness will make it visible in twilight skies as it sinks into the horizon. (1)

It should be quite the night as you should also be able to see each planet and their largest moons.

I’m glad my kids and I gave my husband a telescope for Christmas many moons ago!

    It should come in handy.

Fingers crossed the skies will be clear that week!

    Happy gazing! (1)
