Woman Records Rare "Fire-Rainbow" In Singapore
WOW! I've never seen anything like this before. It's so rare!

That was the case for one woman in Singapore.
In the late afternoon of Monday, February 20, 2017, a colorful haze appeared in the sky.
According to the woman who recorded the video: “I was walking towards my bus stop when I found myself in awe of this beautiful cloud and the myriad of colors that was bursting out of it. This is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, and I literally turned on Facebook Live to share the exact moment that I saw it! I was feeling pretty down over the past week, but this has immediately lifted my spirits. Without a doubt, I praise God for this miracle in the sky!”
This rare and beautiful phenomenon lasted only 15 minutes, but it was seen across the island.
“What is happening – there is a rainbow on top of a cloud,” the woman says in the video. “This is the coolest thing I have ever seen before in my life!”
Others on YouTube were also in awe of the sight.

"Fire rainbow" is a rare phenomenon that can occur when the sun has risen higher than 58° in the sky.

    What causes a fire rainbow?

Fire rainbows or circumhorizontal arcs appear when special conditions are met.

First is the passage of light through these high-level cirrus clouds at a specific angle.

Next is the position of the Sun.

A fire rainbow can only be witnessed when the Sun is at least 58 degrees
    above the horizon.

Ice crystals through which the light disassembles into constituent colors
needs to be hexagonal in shape, with their faces running parallel to the ground.

When light enters through the vertical side face of these ice crystals and leaves from the bottom face,
it refracts, meaning that its path of progression changes (i.e., it bends).

This bending of light is tantamount to light bending through a prism.

If these crystals are aligned perfectly, the whole section of the cirrus cloud behaves like a prism,

    resulting in a rainbow-like appearance.

Also, cirrus clouds are wispy, which is reminiscent of a flame,
which is why this phenomenon is popularly called a fire rainbow.

'Fire rainbows' enthrall residents in North Carolina on Good Friday

    Caleb Bryan

    Fri, April 15, 2022, 5:37 PM·2 min read

Western North Carolina residents were treated to a colorful atmospheric phenomenon
on the afternoon of Apr. 15, Good Friday.

Photos shared on social media showed what is known colloquially as a "fire rainbow"
or, as people posting on Twitter referred to them, "rainbow clouds."

The pre-Easter optical phenomenon is known technically a "circumhorizontal arc"
and is created by sunlight reflecting off of ice crystals.

To see this ice halo, the sun needs to be more than 58 degrees high in the sky,
and high cirrus clouds or jet contrails must be present to bring this spectacular display to life.

A visible satellite image over North Carolina on the afternoon of Apr. 15, 2022, shows high clouds and jet contrails that allowed the circumhorizontal arcs to be visible.
A very delicate balance in the atmosphere is required for this effect to be achieved.

The hexagonal, plate-shaped ice crystals inside the cirrus clouds also need to be aligned horizontally,
so that the light entering through the vertical side of the crystals refracts, bends,
and exits through the horizontal bottom.

This disperses the light into the seven colors of the spectrum, similar to what we see in a rainbow.

    circumhorizontal arc
An optical phenomenon known as a 'circumhorizontal arc' treated people in North Carolina to an unusual sight in the skies on Friday, April 15, 2022. (Brandon Carter)
Brandon Carter, who captured the image above, told AccuWeather,
"I took the photo in Concord," a suburb of Charlotte that's just northeast of the city.

He was driving when he spotted the dazzling spectacle in the sky.

"When I saw it my first thought was to pull over and make sure my daughter
could see what became known for the day as 'rainbow clouds,'" Carter, 41, who works in sales
and said his true passion is astrophotography, recalled.

"It was a great opportunity for my wife and I to talk to her about the science
behind rainbows and a really cool moment."

Circumhorizontal arcs are not entirely rare in the skies over the United States
but are more common in the tropics. However, they can not be seen in Arctic areas
because the sun never appears high enough in the sky to allow for this delicate balance of ingredients to take place.

Simply awesome. Enjoy this fire rainbow captured in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand.

An unusual but spectacular sight, known as a fire rainbow.

Fire rainbows are caused by light passing through wispy, high-altitude cirrus clouds.

When light enters through a vertical side face of such an ice crystal and leaves from the bottom face,
it refracts, or bends, in the same way that light passes through a prism.
