tiny numbers and letters in the eyes of the Mona Lisa Posted Dec 12th 2010 The real-life Da Vinci Code: Historians discover tiny numbers and letters in the eyes of the Mona Lisa By Nick Pisa Add to My Stories Art historians are probing a real-life Da Vinci Code style mystery after discovering tiny numbers and letters painted into the eyes of the artist's enigmatic Mona Lisa painting. Leonardo Da Vinci's 500-year-old Renaissance masterpiece has long been steeped in mystery with even today, the true identity of the woman with the alluring smile still far from certain. The painting also featured in the Dan Brown blockbuster The Da Vinci Code, which was turned into a 2006 film starring Tom Hanks, in which his character interprets secret messages hidden in the Mona Lisa and Da Vinci's other works including The Last Supper. Under the microscope: Historians in Italy have discovered that by magnifying the eyes of the Mona Lisa painting tiny numbers and letters can be seen Naked eyes: Even in close up the numbers and letters are not visible and must be placed under a microscope to become visible Now members of Italy's National Committee for Cultural Heritage have revealed that by magnifying high resolution images of the Mona Lisa's eyes letters and numbers can be seen. Today Silvano Vinceti, president of the Committee, said: 'To the naked the symbols are not visible but with a magnifying glass they can clearly be seen. 'In the right eye appear to be the letters LV which could well stand for his name Leonardo Da Vinci while in the left eye there are also symbols but they are not as defined. Genius: Historians believe that Da Vinci's love of riddles led him to paint himself as a woman - with some believing the Mona Lisa is a self-portrait 'It is very difficult to make them out clearly but they appear to be the letters CE or it could be the letter B - you have to remember the picture is almost 500 years old so it is not as sharp and clear as when first painted. 'While in the arch of the bridge in the background the number 72 can be seen or it could be an L and the number 2.' Mr Vinceti, who has travelled to Paris to examine the painting in the Louvre gallery where it is on display, explained that in true Dan Brown style they were put onto the mystery after fellow committee member Luigi Borgia discovered a musty book in an antique shop. The 50-year-old volume describes how the Mona Lisa's eyes are full of various signs and symbols and he added: 'We are only at the start of this investigation and we hope to be able to dig deeper into this mystery and reveal further details as soon as possible. 'It's remarkable that no-one has noticed these symbols before and from the preliminary investigations we have carried out we are confident they are not a mistake and were put there by the artist.' Mr Vinceti, a Renaissance cold case art historian, is part of the group asking French authorities for permission to exhume Da Vinci's remains from his tomb at Amboise Castle in the Loire Valley. They want to see if the artist's skull is there so that they can try and recreate his face and establish if the Mona Lisa is in fact a self portrait of the artist as many people believe. Mystery: The codes and riddles that the artist hid in his work were illustrated in the Dan Brown book and 2006 film 'The Da Vinci Code' Some historians believe that Da Vinci's was homosexual and that his love of riddles led him to paint himself as a woman while the other theory is that the Mona Lisa is in fact Lisa Gheradini, the wife of Florence merchant or possibly even the artist's mother. Six months ago Mr Vinceti also made headlines around the world after discovering the bones of Renaissance wild man artist Michelangelo Merisi, otherwise known as Caravaggio, in a long forgotten crypt at Porto Ercole on Italy's Tuscan coast. Amanda asks..." I found a book of Leonardo Da vinci's paintings in a Good Will. Browsing through the paintings I came across the Mona Lisa. I did some research on Da Vinci and found that it was thought that he had hidden messages and symbols in his paintings. After watching an episode of ancient aliens on Leonardo Da vinci I saw how they would "flip" the picture in certain places to mirror the painting. hmmm. I thought. I flipped the Mona Lisa and this is what I found. I will attach the flipped picture circling the area where you can see the "Mantis" being. It will take a minute but the longer you look at it the more it becomes visible. And with incredible detail! there are also other images in that area, one that looks like the face of a bull or goat with horns, it looks kind of demonic in nature to me... beyond that in the background when the picture comes together it looks like a waste land, and an explosion, almost nuclear? you can see skeleton faces and some that look like they are coming up out of the ground. This painting is certainly very complex and the things that I have found are absolutely astonishing.. Im not sure if this has already been found, I searched the internet and came up with no results of what I found. What was he trying to say? Is this a warning of our future?
