WHAT DO YOU SEE FIRST ??? This picture is one of the most famous optical illusions ever made and was first published in 1915 by the cartoonist W.E. Hill. People usually see either an old hag or a young girl first, although with practice the brain can switch between the two and eventually see both simultaneously. The key word in this is illusion. Our self concept works in a similar way. We can get completely stuck in seeing ourselves in one way only; the position from which our perception is formed becomes fixed and no matter how hard we look we cannot see more than one 'face'. Depending on our level of self esteem, and to some extent awareness, we may believe that because all we see is the hag that is the only part of us that is real and the one visible to the rest of the world. As well as being a fun and interesting brain teaser, perceptual illusions like this carry an important lesson. They teach and remind us that what we see and base our judgments on is not the whole picture. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder, including our own. Kathryn Thompson
