Ball & Co.'s new patent improved IVORY AND LIGUMVITEE EYE CUPS FOR THE COUNTY OF SIMCOE _________________________________________________ BARRIE - The County Town of Simcoe is beautifully situated near the south-east corner of the Township of Vespra, at the head of Kempenfeldt Bay, with a southern front facing the water, the ground gradually rising to the north part of the town, where it attains a considerable elevation above the level of the lake. It has a fine appearance from the opposite side of the bay, the rising ground bringing every part of the town disticntly into view. There are several beautiful locations in Barrie suitable for private residences. The bay is about ten miles long, and from one to two miles wide, thickly wooded on the opposite shore, and affording a most picturesque view. In the year 1854, the Northern Railway was completed from Toronto to Collingwood - the nearest station to Barrie being Allendale, one mile distant. In 1865 a branch track was laid to Barrie, and, in 1871, a further extension was completed to Orillia, and thence to the Muskoka territory. The town has, within the last few years, made unusual progress; the surrounding country is of an excellent quality, and the mercantile, mechanical, agricultural and general prosperity of Barrie will compare favourably with that of any other town in the Province. Barrie is comparitively a new town. In the year 1831 a squatter named David Edgar took up his quarters in an old Government store-house situated near the present location of Edward's book store. In the following year John Bingham built the first log-house, having, been induced to settle here by William Mann, then living in a log-house at Kempenfeldt Among the early settlers were Capt. A.E. Walker, John McWatt, Andrew and Alexander Graham, James Palmer, J. Sanford, Thrift Meldrum, W.B. McVittie, Edmund Lally, W. Boys, Solomon Baillie, Thomas Smith, Richard Carney and T.D. McConkey. Robert Ross laid out the village, which was named in honour of Commodore Barrie. In 1837 the town comprised twenty-eight families. In 1843 the County of Simcoe, until then part of the Home District, was formed, with Barrie as its county town. It was the original intention of Governor Simcoe to fix upon a point two miles east of the present town as a site for settlement, and the village of Kempenfeldt was surveyed, but the superior advantages of the present location changed the intention. Distant from Toronto 64 miles; Collingwood 31; Orillia 27; Penetanguishene 32 miles. Population 4,000

It was founded in 1853, and was incorpor- ated as a town in 1858. The harbour is capacious, unsurpassed by any other on the lakes, and is beautifully diversified with islands. A large trade is carried on with the Western States, and immense quantities of lumber are annually transported by rail. There are several manufacturing establishments here, and the local trade is rapidly increasing. Steamers leave here for Duluth, Fort William, Sault Ste. Marie, Parry Sound, Byng Inlet, Owen Sound and other parts. As an evidence of the prosperity of Collingwood may be noted the increase of its population from 1,500 in 1866, to 3,500 in 1872. Good stabling attached. ________________________________________ ORIILIA - A large and important village situate on Lake Couchiching, in the township of Orillia, in a section of country celebrated for its varied and lovely scenery, and excellent sporting and fishing grounds. There is a fragment of early history connected with the site of Orillia which may prove interesting. In the year 1615, the celebrated Champlain, "the first pioneer," explored the Upper Ottawa passing up the Mattawan River to Lake Nipissing and thence by the French River to Lake Manitou or the Georgian Bay and Lake Huron where the exploration of the adjacent country was continued. At length he reached Cahiague, the present Orillia, one of the chief lodges of the powerful and warlike Hurons. Champlain joined this tribe in an expedition against the Iroquois in which the Hurons were signally defeated, and Champlain himself wounded. This inaugurated the dreadful war between those tribes which after several years of almost uninterrupted hostility, resulted in the annihilation of the Hurons, as a separate tribe; a few of their descendants now occupy the village of Lorette in the Province of Quebec. In the year 1831, the British Government made a treaty with the Ojibways for a village site and at once built a Council Room, an Episcopal church, a schoolhouse, sixteen log houses, and a much larger and more substantial one of the same material for the chief's private residence. The chief William Yellowhead died about seven years ago and is buried in the English churchyard. The old house is now, after great improvements, used as the Episcopal parsonage. In 1838, the whites petitioned for a landing, which was granted, and the Indians were removed to Rama in Ontario county, where, a church, schoolhouse and dwellings were provided for them and the entire possess- ion of Orillia was secured to the whites. In 1832, the first white settlers arrived. Gerald Alley, Esq. being the first. In 1836 only six white families resided in the village, viz: Robert Bailey, Michael Bowers, Jacob Gill, Andrew Moffatt, Neil Morrison and John Rowe. Robert Bailey, Andrew Moffatt, Michael Bowers, John Harvie and John O'Connor are the oldest settlers living here now (1872). In the year 1835 the Post office was established; Gerald Alley, first Post master, previous to this time, Thomas McCausland carried the mails to Barrie, a distance of 28 miles. Within the past few years Orillia has rapidly increased in extent, wealth and population, and its prospects for the future are even more favorable. Manufacturing establisheds are springing up and few, if any, towns in Ontario posses better facilities for this branch of industry. The Northern Muskoka Juction and Midland railways centre here. Steamers ply to all ports on Lake Simcoe, theTHE 1872 GAZATTEER of SIMCOE COUNTY file:///C|/Users/Wayne%20Cook/Desktop/1872_Gazatteer.html[23/02/2021 7:45:38 PM] extensive Muskoka Free Grant territory is in the neighborhood, the local trade extensive, the population enterprising, and the future prosperity of Orillia is a certanity, and, that is advent as a TOWN, perhaps, a COUNTY TOWN is not very remote, is equally sure. Stage communication by Harvie & Midland's line to Bracebridge Rosseau, Parry Sound and intermediate places, and in winter through to Parry Sound. Railway connexion with all parts of the country will be opened in the course of the next year. Orillia is distant from Barrie 27 miles, Bell Ewart 50, Washago 12, Gravehurst via Washago by stage 14, Coldwater 14, Midland 19 and Toronto 20. Population 2000. CHURCHES - Church of England, Rev. A. This village has long been a place of note; a fort was established here during the last war with the United States and kept up until a few years ago, when the garrison was withdrawn. The chief trade is in furs and fish, and provisions for the mining districts on the north shore of Lake Huron. The village contains English, Roman Catholic and Methodist churches. In the year 1859, the Reformatory was established about three miles from the village. The present building is of four stories, have a front of 404 feet and the height is 88 feet. Every necessary accommodation is provided, and health, cleanliness and industry are the rule; the moral physical, religious and educational training of the boys is most carefully attended to, and the kind and firm disc- ipline maintained by the superintendent, Mr. William Moore Kelly, places this institution in the enviable rank of a model for similar establishments.THE 1872 GAZATTEER of SIMCOE COUNTY file:///C|/Users/Wayne%20Cook/Desktop/1872_Gazatteer.html[23/02/2021 7:45:38 PM] Steamers connect with Collingwood and stages with Barrie.
