Ulay : the conceptual artist Frank Uwe Laysiepen known, among other things, for his partnership with Marina Abramovic, died late on Sunday evening in Ljubljana, where he lived since 2009. He was 76 years old last November. Cancer patient for several years, Ulay was considered one of the most important contemporary visual artists, who has left his mark in the history of art as a pioneer of body art, performance and Polaroid photography. As reported by the state television portal, Ulay said he was "the most famous unknown artist". The news of Ulay's disappearance began to circulate this morning, when the Slovenian director and documentary filmmaker Damjan Kozole, friend of Ulay, published on his Facebook page a tribute to his missing friend, proposing a video of a 2012 exhibition at the Museum of Ljubljana Modern Art on the death of photography, the first form of artistic expression used by Ulay. The two marked and in some ways revolutionized the scene of artistic performances, after they met in Amsterdam in 1976, the city that Ulay had chosen in 1968 on the run from a conflictual relationship with the family of origin, linked to Nazism. At first, the artist trained and established himself as a photographer, and then sought alternative artistic expressions in response to questions related to human identity, first of all from a point of view of the physical boundaries of the human body and sexuality. The meeting with Marina Abramovic pushed him towards more radical experiments, and also the end of their artistic and personal symbiosis was the subject of the representation "The lovers: the walk on the Great Wall", a journey on foot in 1988 along the Wall starting from the leaders opposites to meet halfway and say goodbye. After this cycle of his life, Ulay returned to devote himself to photography, exploring marginalized people in contemporary society. Among the most significant series of this period is the Berlin Afterimages of 1994-1995. The two met again in public in 2010, during Abramovic's performance at Moma in New York, in which the Serbian artist stood for 736 hours staring at the visitors who sat in front of her.
